Ogham stones are not rare, but they still startle because they arrive uninvited. This one came up in a new graveyard in Clonmacnoise while men dug a grave for Tom Longworth of Ballinahown. Under fresh soil and living grief, a fifth- or sixth-century edge of sandstone appeared, its name broken but still proud enough to show NADAV. Death was preparing a hole for one man, and memory fell into it for many.

This Ogham stone was found during the digging of a grave in the new cemetery in May 1990. It is a large rectangular piece of sandstone with a short damaged ogham inscription on one edge. The inscription is damaged, but the letters NADAV… can be made out (Manning 1994, 42-3). It may date from as early as the fifth or sixth century (Manning 1994, 42).
