Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00372 Dimensions: Upper 0.40 x 0.26cm Lower 0.225 x 0.20cm Outline expansional cross with median line in a two line rectilinear frame, the inner line formed by the outer line of the cross. The lozenge shaped centre has interlace, the semicircular terminals fret work, patterns. Inscription: 'OR AR… SAM', in a two lines horizontally above the frame and in the upper contours. Evidence of discovery: Davis 1984. Condition: Two fragments; right arm missing, frame damaged. National Monuments Service, Photo number: 81-90, 784. Date likely to the 9th to 11th century AD, consistent with high crosses of the early medieval period in Ireland. The cross-slab may have had a liturgical or commemorative function, possibly marking a grave or significant site within the monastic settlement of Clonmacnoise.
