Why this matters

Early Christian graveyard; 6th century AD. Significantly associated with the foundation of Clonmacnoise, an important monastic and scholarly center in medieval Ireland.

What is recorded here

The graveyard stands on the site of the Early Christian site founded by St. Ciarán in the mid-6th century on the eastern bank of the River Shannon. It includes the ruins of a cathedral (OF005-004001-), seven churches (OF005-005----, 007001-, 008001-, 009----, 010----, 013001-, 052----), a round tower (OF005-020----), six high crosses (OF005-016----, 017----, 018----, 019----, 021----, 064----) and the largest collection of Early Christian graveslabs in Western Europe (see OF005-023001- and following).
