Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00637 Dimensions: H 0.37, W 0.325 Double outline cross with spirals at the cross arm endings enclosed in a three line frame decorated with a large band of three strand interlace. No inscription. Evidence of discovery: OPW 1954-58. Condition: A fragment of stem and frame. National Monuments Service, Photo number: 81-292, 822, 854. Date likely to the 9th to 10th century AD, based on the style of the double outline cross and spiral decoration typical of the early medieval period in Ireland. Such crosses were often associated with Christian grave markers or monastic sites, and Clonmacnoise was a major religious centre during this time.
