What is recorded here

Cross-slab CLN00556 in Clonmacnoise is a small worn fragment, twenty-two centimetres tall and twenty centimetres wide, marked by lines that no longer form a clear design. It may have stood as a grave marker, a boundary stone or a forgotten cross before flaking and weathering removed its meaning. In a place crowded with sacred memory, even an unclear slab belongs: it is the kind of stone people passed, touched or buried beside before learning what it recorded.

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00556 Dimensions: H 0.225, W 0.20, T 0.02 A series of seemingly carved lines runs across the slab; the design is not discernable. No inscription. Evidence of discovery: Davis 1984. Condition: Fragment. Flaked and worn.. The Clonmacnoise inventory was compiled by the Office of Public Works.
