What is recorded here

Half a metre of worn stone stands in Clonmacnoise, its name erased except for IN L and a gash beneath the letters. Lime has bitten the surface until the carving barely resists forgetting. Whatever person or promise it marked has surrendered to rain and time, leaving only a shape the eye must complete.

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00482 Dimensions: H 0.51, W 0.30 A very worn slab with a damaged inscription with a gash underneath it. Could be a modern reworking. Inscription: 'IN L…'. Evidence of discovery: Davis 1984. Condition: Badly lime damaged; very worn inscription.. The Clonmacnoise inventory was compiled by the Office of Public Works.
