Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00462 Dimensions: H 0.61, W 0.59, T 0.09 Romanesque slab. Part of centre of an outline ring cross with spirals in the quadrants or possibly two circles with central roundels and not spirals at all. Enclosed in a single line ridge border. At present located in Temple Ri, Clonmacnoise. No inscription. Evidence of discovery: Davis 1984. Condition: Very worn, pattern difficult to decipher.. Date likely to the 11th–12th century AD, associated with the Romanesque period and early Christian monastic settlement at Clonmacnoise. The cross design may symbolise Christian faith, with spiral motifs possibly reflecting earlier pre-Christian artistic traditions or symbolic meanings related to eternity or the cosmos.
