Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00460 Dimensions: A 0.635 x 0.65 x 0.10cm B 0.85 x 0.625 x 9.5cm A double outline cross with a square centre and terminals inside a two line rectilinear frame. The corners of the frame of the lower fragment are curved. Macalister saw only fragment A. Now located in Temple Ri, Clonmacnoise. Inscription: Macalister thought he saw an inscription on the right side - no trace survives. Evidence of discovery: Macalister 1898-1905. Date likely to the 9th–10th century AD, consistent with the high cross tradition in Ireland. The cross may have had a Christian funerary or commemorative function, reflecting the monastic heritage of Clonmacnoise.
