Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00347 Dimensions: H 0.504, W 0.389, T 0.03 Outline expansional cross with a median line. The looped semicircular terminal and circular central expansions have fret pattern. The slab tapers to the base. Inscription: There is an incomplete inscription 'OP MACC'. More of it survives but is illegible. Evidence of discovery: Macalister 1898-1905 found the left fragment. The other was found by the OPW in 1954-58. Condition: Two worn fragments. Date likely to the early medieval period (7th–10th century AD), consistent with the Clonmacnoise monastic site. The cross-slab may have had a Christian funerary or commemorative function, with the expanded cross and fret patterns reflecting Insular artistic traditions.
