Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00344 Dimensions: H 0.496, W 0.418, T 0.03 Outline expansional cross with median line. The centre and semicircular terminals have fret patterns. There are unusual loops in the left terminal but an attempt to carve proper loops on the right terminal failed. Inscription: 'O] R T DO CANANDEN'. Evidence of discovery: Macalister 1949. Condition: Very worn and lime damaged. Upper arm/stem damaged.. The Clonmacnoise inventory was compiled by the Office of Public Works. Date likely to the early medieval period, possibly 8th to 10th century AD, given the style of the expansional cross and fretwork typical of Insular Christian art. Such crosses often had Christian symbolic meaning, used in burial or commemorative contexts, and may have been associated with the monastic site of Clonmacnoise.
