Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00328 Dimensions: H 1.212, W 0.29, T 0.102 Outline expansional cross with median line. The surviving semicircular looped terminals have fret patterning and the circular centre a triple arm spiral. Below the stem terminal is a two line circle with fret pattern. Inscription: 'OR DO GILLA CHRIST' inscribed vertically. Evidence of discovery: Petrie 1822. Condition: Very flaked and two arm terminals are damaged. Date likely to the early medieval period (7th–10th century AD), associated with Christian monastic activity at Clonmacnoise. The cross-slab may have served as a grave marker or commemorative monument, its decorative elements reflecting Insular artistic traditions.
