Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00323 Dimensions: H 0.574, W 0.275, T 0.014 Outline expansional cross with median line. The circular central expansion has a triple arm spiral (?), the left arm terminal is semicircular with a fret pattern and the stem terminal ends in an oval. The slab is oval, apparently worked rather than natural. Inscription: A vertical inscription 'A]NNCHAID'. Evidence of discovery: OPW 1954-58 Condition: In two pieces, part of right side of slab missing. National Monuments Service, Photo number: 81-191, 905. Date likely to the early medieval period (7th–10th century AD), consistent with other carved stones at Clonmacnoise. The spiral and cross suggest Christian symbolism, possibly associated with monastic activity or funerary use.
