Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00296 Dimensions: H 0.46, W 0.28 Outline expansional cross with median line. The one remaining terminal has a triangular shaped expansion. The centre is circular. No inscription. Evidence of discovery: Macalister 1898-1905. Condition: Fragment spoilt by lichen and cement.. Date likely to the early medieval period (8th–11th century AD), associated with Christian monastic activity in Clonmacnoise. The expansional cross may have had a liturgical or commemorative function, typical of high crosses in Ireland.
