Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00291 Dimensions: H 0.448, W 0.43, T 0.052 Plain outline expansional cross with median line. The central expansion is circular and the looped terminals semicircular. No inscription. Evidence of discovery: OPW 1954-58. Condition: Badly worn. Left arm/part of centre/stem remain. Date likely to the 9th to 11th century AD, consistent with the high cross tradition in Ireland. The cross may have had a funerary or commemorative function, reflecting Christian symbolism and possibly associated with the monastic settlement of Clonmacnoise.
