Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00285 Dimensions: H 0.685, W 0.505, T 0.11 An outline expansional cross with median line and blank semicircular terminals. There is a linear cross with wedge shaped terminals in the circular central expansion. The design has been fitted into the shape of the stone (?). Inscription: Vertical inscription 'OR DO MARTANAN', the last 'AN' fitted beneath the left arm. Evidence of discovery: Petrie 1872. Condition: Complete but very worn especially down right side. Probably dates to the early medieval period (7th–10th century). The cross-slab likely had a Christian funerary or commemorative function, reflecting the monastic and ecclesiastical significance of Clonmacnoise.
