Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00267 Dimensions: H 0.595, W 0.505, T 0.085 An outline cross with circular centre and triangular shaped arm terminals which project just outside the ring. Inscription: Curved around the top of the cross is 'CHROMRANEC'. Evidence of discovery: Davis 1984 Condition: Worn but complete. National Monuments Service, Photo number: 81-712. Early Christian period, likely 7th to 10th century AD; the cross design reflects Insular Christian art and may have marked a burial or served a commemorative function. Clonmacnoise was a significant monastic site, and such slabs are often associated with ecclesiastical or high-status burials.
