Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00263 Dimensions: H 0.54, W 0.36, T 0.054 Crude outline of an expansional cross with semi-circular terminals, which are square like the centre, inside a single line frame. There are curves in the corners of the frame. The right arm is worn away and the frame is damaged. No inscription. Evidence of discovery: Petrie states that M. Stokes drew the slab at Iniscoloran in Lough Ree in 1869(?). Condition: Very worn but complete. National Monuments Service, Photo number: 81-93. Date likely to the early medieval period, possibly 8th to 10th century, given the style of the expansional cross. Such crosses were often associated with Christian symbolism and may have marked a burial or served a commemorative function.
