Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00223 Dimensions: H 0.60, W 0.63, T 0.06 The double outline hollow angled cross inside a three line border has a central lozenge with short protrusions. The line of the border, which has irregular fret patterning, is broken by the arm of the cross. Inscription: Very crudely inscribed 'CTORE'. Evidence of discovery: Macalister 1898-1905. Date likely to the 9th–10th century AD, associated with early Christian Ireland. The cross and lozenge motif may signify a Christian funerary monument, possibly marking a high-status burial.
