Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00204 Dimensions: H 0.48, W 0.34, T 0.08 Outline ring cross with hollow angles inside a two line rectilinear frame. There are very clear chisel pecking marks on the cross stem and the frame. The cross is an unusual form for Clonmacnoise. No inscription. Date likely to the early medieval period (7th–10th century AD), given the style of the ringed cross and construction techniques. The cross may have had a Christian funerary or commemorative function, common in monastic sites such as Clonmacnoise.
