What is recorded here

Clonmacnoise cross-slab CLN00174 is a small ring fragment, 14 cm high and 14 cm wide, with a possible square centre and no inscription. It survives as part of a ring, not a complete monument, yet the shape still suggests a maker who cut a bold circle and left the centre open to imagination. In a place where larger slabs carry names and stories, this little fragment may have marked an ordinary person whose identity never needed stone to repeat.

Date likely to the early medieval period, associated with Christian monastic activity in Clonmacnoise. The ring cross may have had a liturgical or commemorative function, common in Irish high cross tradition.
