Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00129 Dimensions: H 1.125, W 0.57, T 0.07 A double outline ring cross. The cross is plain with square arm ends the cross arms meet in outline in the centre, it is not blank as in Macalister. Inscription: 'OR DO HUACAN[AN' inscribed vertically up the left side of the cross. Evidence of discovery: Petrie 1822 Condition: Complete but very worn. Almost illegible. Date likely to the early medieval period (7th–10th century AD), consistent with Christian monastic activity in Clonmacnoise. The ring cross may have had a funerary or commemorative function, reflecting the spread of Christianity in early Ireland.
