Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00106 Dimensions: H 0.27, W 0.19 An outline cross with median line, hollow angles and rectangular terminanls. The median line does not reach the centre. The surface of the slab is very uneven. Inscription: The inscription 'CLODLNA' runs beneath the frame. Evidence of discovery: OPW 1954-58 Condition: Only the lower half of the slab survives. National Monuments Service, Photo number: 81-73, 487. Date likely to the 8th to 10th century AD, consistent with early Christian insular art. The cross may have had a liturgical or commemorative function, reflecting the monastic tradition of Clonmacnoise.
