Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00089 Dimensions: H 0.44, W 0.47, T 0.032 The slab, which was probably originally oval in shape, has a double outline cross with a square centre and rectangular terminals inside a two line circular frame. The cross is covered in interlace plaitwork. No inscription. Evidence of discovery: Macalister 1898-1905 Condition: Half the slab only with part of centre, frame and two arms. Probably dates to the early medieval period (7th–10th century). The double outline cross with a square centre is typical of Christian grave markers, suggesting a religious or commemorative function.
