Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00051 Dimensions: H 0.38, W 0.37.5, T 0.06 Only one quadrant survives showing an outline cross with median line inside a two line frame. The inner line of the frame intersects in the corners forming squares. It also cuts across the arms of the cross. No inscription. Evidence of discovery: Davis 1984 Condition: Fragment of corner of stone. Flaked and worn. National Monuments Service, Photo number: 81-1357. Date likely to the 8th to 10th century AD, consistent with early Christian cross-slabs in Ireland. The cross may have had a liturgical or commemorative function, possibly marking a grave or sacred space.
