Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00005 Dimensions: H 0.435, W 0.256, T 0.07 Two line rectangular frame divided vertically by a line in the centre of which is a linear cross in a roundel. The two halves of the design are mirrored apart from a three leaf clover on the left with a misformed swastika on the right. Possibly an altar slab. Inscription: There are the remains of an inscription. Evidence of discovery: OPW 1954-58 Condition: Complete, but some flaking scince 1954-58 photo. Date likely to the early medieval period (7th–10th century AD), associated with Christian monastic activity at Clonmacnoise. The cross within a roundel suggests a liturgical or commemorative function, possibly marking a burial or sacred space.
