Meelick Tower stands in County Offaly as a nineteenth-century Martello fort, built to watch the River Shannon for enemies. Its thick walls and narrow height suggest a place where fear of invasion shaped daily life, perhaps forcing sentinels to climb spiralling stairs and peer through small openings while mist rolled across the water. The tower still embodies that vigilance, preserving the moment when a local landscape became a military boundary.

Post 1700 artillery fortification built in the 19th century for the defence of the River Shannon (Kerrigan 1980, 171-4).
