Carrigaholt Castle is a fifteen-century tower house perched on a rocky headland above the Shannon Estuary, built to resist siege and retain chiefs. Tadhg Caech MacMahon defended it against Clifford in 1598, yet it still passed through O'Brien, Cromwell and Burton hands before becoming a state monument. Its five-storey flagstone body rises nearly nineteen metres, armed with murder holes, gun loops and corner bartizans, while wine cells and a damaged spiral stair remain inside. The sea has taken ground around it, but the tower still stands complete enough to show why men kept fighting for it.
