Castle Campbell rises above Dollar as the lowland seat of the earls and dukes of Argyll, its origin remembered in Castle Gloom and narrowed by two steep gorges. The Campbells took it around 1460, built it into a prestigious central-Scottish residence, and in 1490 obtained a parliamentary act changing its name to Castle Campbell. Mary, Queen of Scots, is said to have looked at it and called it a reminder of home, giving the stone a sudden warmth.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castle Campbell as Findspot (20th Century), Axehead (stone)(period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
