What is recorded here

The church of 'Villa Pontis' is included in the Papal Taxation list (1302-1307) for the deanery of Ossuris (Cal Docs Ire, V, 297) and is mentioned in the annates of the diocese of Ardfert under the year 1492 (O'Connor 1958, 38). It has been suggested that the name may be a translation of the Irish Baile an Chlair, a townland near Anascaul which may formerly have included the townland of Gurteen and which may have derived its name from a plank bridge over the Owenascaul river in the latter townland (Hickson 1888, 446-7). The above description is derived from J. Cuppage (compiler) 'Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey.' Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne (1986), no. 998. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2013
