Children's burial ground in Shantallow (clare By.)

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Children died young in Shantallow, and adults carried them through grassland still marked by the Gobbaun Seer's House. The burial ground left no stones or rows for later eyes, only a tradition passed beside the land. Forgetting did not erase the children; it returned them to the ordinary movement of rain, root and breath.
In level grassland, c. 130m N of the 'Gobbaun Seer's House' (GA044-089----). According to local tradition, there was a CBG in this area but no visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
