Beeston Castle stands on a sandstone crag above the Cheshire Plain, built in the 1220s by Ranulf de Blondeville, 6th Earl of Chester, after his return from the Crusades. Its stones reuse older Iron Age defences, linking medieval ambition to Bronze Age metalwork and Neolithic gathering on the same ridge. Cromwell’s men broke it in 1646, yet the gatehouse and curtain walls still rise against the sky, guarding a legend that Richard II’s treasure sleeps beneath the grass.
