Flint walls and glazed Penn tiles still mark the gatehouse where Queen Margaret of Anjou had her privy chamber above the timber bridge. She used Pleshey between 1445 and 1461, moving through rooms that had first served Thomas of Woodstock and Eleanor in the 1380s. The castle changed hands with kings and queens, yet its chambers kept being cleaned, heated and made ready for visit after visit.
