Charcoal-making site in Camlin

Located on a SW-facing slope c. 350m SW of a col between Camlin Hill c. 400m NW of the col and an E-W spur of Ballylane Hill that rises to the E of the col. Centre-line testing (E4067) in advance of the N25 New Ross bypass identified an oval charcoal-production pit (dims. 1.49m NE-SW; 0.96m N-S; max. D 0.07m) that had a fill of reddish-brown sandy clay with charcoal inclusions. This pit produced a calibrated C14 date of AD 1020-1160 (Eogan and Kelly 2016, 234). The site was set aside for resolution as Camlin 8, Area A (Doyle et al. 2010, 35) when further excavation (E4113) identified a second pit (dims 0.72m x 0.64m; D 0.18m) that is probably contemporary but which contained no traces of charcoal (Clark and Hackett 2010, 8; Hackett 2013) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 September, 2013
