Samuel Pepys brown plaque

This brown commemorative plaque records: The Swan Hotel. On this comer site stood The Swan Hotel, an ancient coaching inn reputed to have been visited by Samuel Pepys. The building burned down in The Great Fire of Biggleswade in 1785, was subsequently rebuilt to become the principal hotel in the town. Demolished in 1973. Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) was a prominent English naval administrator and Member of Parliament, best known for his diary from 1660 to 1669, which provides a detailed account of life in London during the Restoration period, including eyewitness descriptions of events such as the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London.
