Castle — unclassified in Kilglass

Castle — unclassified

Why this matters

A land grant of 1585 in the Barony of Tirrereagh suggests English colonial interest in the area during the late 16th century, though specific builders or holders of the castle are not identified. The site is remembered primarily through early historical records and archaeological surveys highlighting its potential role in the Tudor period's territorial expansion.

What is recorded here

Listed in the SMR (1989) and RMP (1995) and classified 'Castle' in both. Its inclusion in the SMR is based on documentary evidence. Wood-Martin, (1882, 316) recorded a 1585 land grant thus: 'In the Barony of Tirrereagh, that Edmond O'Dowd shall have 3 qrs as a demaine to his castle of Kylgalsse free ...'. The compilers of the SMR assumed that the castle was located at the 18th century 'Kilglass House'. However there are no upstanding remains of the castle visible at this location. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
