Standing stone in Carrowcrom

In pasture, located on a low rise on the N boundary of Carrowcrom townland. There is a small river 25m to N; the townland boundary coincides with the course of the river. The Ox Mountains define the skyline to E and Nephin Mountain is visible to SW. Indicated as 'Standing Stone' on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps, this imposing stone is a National Monument (no. 293) in state ownership. It consists of a massive upright slab (H 2.7m; Wth 1.8m; T 0.25m at N end; 0.45m at S end), with two broad flat faces, and a thin, wedge-shaped cross-section; its long axis is aligned N-S. It is relatively straight-sided for most of its height, but is slightly narrower in width at the base (Wth 1.7m), and tapers slightly to a gently rounded, thin-edged top. Probably dating to the Late Neolithic or Bronze Age, this standing stone may have had ritual or territorial significance, possibly aligned with landscape features such as the Ox Mountains or the river. Local folklore or specific use is not recorded.
