Golate, formerly known by several names including Porth Llongau and Shipsgate, was a significant maritime gateway in Cardiff where ships would embark; it played a crucial role during the 16th century when piracy flourished, contributing to Cardiff's wealth through plundered goods, and later in the 18th century when arms were smuggled to America during the War of Independence.
