What is recorded here

Indicated is a ghost garden beside Carbury castle where a straight avenue still points at Carbury Hill. Grass has swallowed the rectangular beds and earthworks, but the line remains visible across three hundred metres of County Kildare. The castle made the landscape, the landscape made the castle worthy of being seen from a distance, and forgetting has not erased the shape.

Extending to the E, S and W of Carbury castle (KD008-001002-) are low, grassed-over earthworks covering a large rectangular area (dims. L c. 330m E-W; Wth c. 200m N-S), the probable remains of an extensive designed landscape, including rectangular gardens and an avenue (L c. 130m; Wth 9m) leading SSW from the castle and orientated towards the summit of Carbury Hill (OD 407 feet).
