Knockmaa rises above Galway, carrying a plain limestone cross set into a rectangular plinth near its summit. The cross remembers Denis Kirwan Bernard, 1882 to 1956, standing sixteen metres southeast of Finvarra's Castle while thorn and briar crowd around its base. It is not ancient or ornate, but it is definite: a tall stone marker in a wild place, keeping one life visible when the mountain would have swallowed the name.

Near the summit of Knockmaa, c. 18m to the SE of Finvarra's Castle (GA042-064001-). This is a tall plain 20th-century limestone cross inserted into a rectangular limestone plinth. It is dedicated to the memory of Denis Kirwan Bernard (1882-1956). The immediate vicinity of the cross is heavily overgrown with scrub, thorn and briars.
