Graveslab in Callan South lies broken into four pieces at the west end of St Mary’s church, its Latin name lost unless the missing upper border still holds the shape of the person it marked. The seven-armed cross and fleur-de-lys terminals survive in limestone, sharp enough to suggest pride, devotion or warning. Whoever placed it there believed stone could keep a life visible long after breath left the body.

Lying prostrate at the W end of the S aisle of the nave of St Mary’s church (KK026-010012-), Callan. A straight-sided limestone slab (total L c. 1.86m; Wth 0.69m; min. T 0.16m). It is decorated with a seven-armed segmented cross with fleur-de-lys terminals, carved in relief. There is a three-barred knop below the cross-head. The cross-shaft (Wth 0.07m) rests on a stepped cross-base. There is an inscription along the sinister border (Wth 01m) in Latin, in raised Black Letter script, however the slab has been broken in a number of places and the upper sinister border, with its text, is missing. The surviving slab is in four pieces, the upper dexter corner (L 0.38m; Wth 0.29m), the upper sinister corner (L 0.38m; Wth 0.4m), the upper centre portion decorated with the lower part of the cross-head and upper portion of the cross-shaft (L 0.63m; Wth 0.62m) and the lower portion of the slab (L 0.92m; Wth 0.69m), though the lower dexter corner is missing.
