Linear earthwork in Caherweesheen

Linear earthwork

What is recorded here

'Located on a limestone reef in an area of grassland, which affords extensive panoramic views on all sides, the aspect to south and west being especially spectacular. This reef is now very overgrown with small bushes and scrub. At least three circular enclosures of earth and stone can be discerned as well as at least two mounds of stone, one large and one considerably smaller. A short linear bank of earth and stone also occurs on the reef. The linear earthwork runs in a roughly E-W direction for a distance of 24.0m. Now heavily overgrown, it measures 8.00m in width at base and 1.50m in height. Where the southern side of the bank has been eroded it can be seen to be composed of earth and small fragments of limestone.' Compiled by Michael Connolly for the Archaeological Survey of Ireland as part of a survey of the Lee Valley area in 1996-97. Date of upload: 25 April 2012
