Why this matters
Toberavower is traditionally associated with Saint Abhaoir, a 6th-century Irish saint known for his ascetic practices and healing miracles. The well may have been a site of pilgrimage and was likely used for ritual washing or drinking to seek cures, particularly for skin ailments and general well-being.
What is recorded here
Located on the SW edge of Westport town. This road-side, spring well is named ‘Toberavower’ on the OS 6-inch maps. It is enclosed by a cement-bonded stone structure (1.3m by 0.8m), open to the W, with a lean-to roof, dating to the modern era. There are no known local traditions associating it with a saint or ritual activities. Its status as a holy well is uncertain.
