Ruperra Castle rose in Caerphilly as a grand Jacobean house for Sir Thomas Morgan, fitting for a king when Charles I stayed there in 1645 after Naseby. It survived royal visits, militia inspections, fire, rebuilding and changing fashions until the Morgan family stopped living there and abandoned it. Now its ruined rooms and wild gardens keep the shape of a house that once believed it would last forever.
