Caerphilly Castle is the largest castle in Wales, spanning thirty acres of concentric stone rings and artificial lakes that challenged every attacker who approached. Gilbert de Clare built it from 1268 to project power across Glamorgan, creating a defensive shape so advanced that it changed castle design throughout Britain. The water defences still surround the ruins, preserving the feeling of a place designed to overwhelm rather than merely resist.
