Why this matters
Built by Gilbert de Clare, 7th Earl of Gloucester, in the late 13th century, Caerphilly Castle is one of the largest and most complete medieval castles in Wales. It is important as a key example of early Edwardian military architecture and played a strategic role during the Welsh Wars.
