Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Castlesteads is a promontory fort on the east bank of the Irwell, recorded as a scheduled monument near Banks Farm. It is a place where the land itself was shaped to watch, defend or contain, though no surviving name explains who stood there when the river ran past. The water may have carried life away or brought people in, and the earth may have held tools, bones or forgotten warnings. What remains is a boundary made visible, a line drawn before human memory could forget it.
The National Heritage List for England records Promontory fort called Castlesteads on the east bank of the Irwell 550m SSE of Banks Farm as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
