Inner and outer face of gateway have lined-and-ruled rendered walling with limestone plinth, archway itself having tooled limestone quoins, string course and blind cross loops. Outer face has carved limestone plaque to parapet bearing family crest and screen walls have cut limestone name plaques. and blind Tudor-arched openings to screen walls, with tooled cut limestone sills. Archway has cut limestone block-and-start surround with raised keystone, moulded imposts, inner side of gateway having decorative double-leaf wrought-iron gates. Set in curvilinear rendered boundary walls.
This robust monumental gateway takes the Triumphal arch motif, with its processional associations, and imaginatively recreates it in a Gothic Revival style. The composition of this entranceway is representative of the inventive novelty and craftsmanship of the late nineteenth century. The Purcell family crest can been seen over the entrance archway. Terminating the vista looking east from Churchtown, this gateway forms a grand and imposing entrance announcing the presence of Burton Park beyond.
