Burnt pit in Forgney

Burnt pit

What is recorded here

Medieval burnt pit uncovered and fully excavated by Jonathan King under licence No. 16E0446 during development works of the Center Parcs Leisure development. In poorly drained area of coniferous plantation. Site identified as a small elongated oval-shaped burnt pit (dims. 2.5m N-S x 0.6m E-W) set against a large limestone boulder (dims. 1.5m x 1.25m x H 0.55m) with a spread (dims. 1.8m N-S x 0.6m E-W x H 0.45m) of stones running N from the boulder. Excavation of the fill in the burnt pit identified burnt stone and charcoal flecks. A sample of Alder wood from the fill returned a late medieval date.
