Casey grandmothers may have watched children run across that pasture while their own bones waited beneath protruding slabs. The burial ground in Kilmacurrane still keeps a rectangular shadow on a north-facing slope, with three low mounds aligned like forgotten chairs. Grass, rain and time have done what reverence sometimes avoids: they have made the dead ordinary, visible only when looked for.
In pasture, on N-facing slope. Rectangular area (17m N-S; 20m E-W) defined by field fence to S; enclosing element obscured by overgrowth elsewhere. Three low rectangular mounds of earth and stone are evenly placed along N perimeter (measurements from W to E respectively; H 0.25m; 1.6m x 1.3m: H 0.35m; 1.6m x 1.5m: H 0.6m; 1.6m x 1.4m). Two slabs protrude from hillslope c. 1m S of E and W mounds; each partially covered with loose stones; one of these is possibly the 'flat stone c. 4ft 3ins by 3ft 2ins' referred to by Bowman (1934, 254) as 'evidently a tomb stone'. Interior slopes steeply downhill from S to N; shallow hollow in SW corner. According to local information, site has never been cultivated and one slab marks burial place of "Caseys". Bowman (ibid.) described site as burial ground '22 yds in diameter' with 'fence...practically levelled...no sign of the early church'.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
