This blue commemorative plaque records: The Chilwell Explosion. On 1st July 1918 an explosion destroyed part of the Chilwell Shell Filling Factory killing 139 workers. Many of the victims are buried in these graves. Recorded plaque organisation: Southern Broxtowe Blue Plaque Group.
The Chilwell Explosion refers to a catastrophic munitions accident during World War I, resulting in significant loss of life among factory workers and highlighting the dangers faced by those supporting the war effort on the home front.
